Urgent: R-410A Phase-Out Regulations

R-410a refrigerant

July 19, 2024

We’re issuing a critical alert about the availability of R-410a refrigerant. Due to its environmental impact, R-410A is being phased out. The EPA has implemented regulations to gradually reduce its use and encourage the adoption of more climate-friendly alternatives. R-410A refrigerant will be phased out in the coming years due to new environmental regulations.

The production and installation of certain HVAC systems, including those using R-410A refrigerant, will be phased out in the coming years. The timeline depends on the equipment type (see timeline below). This means that options for replacement systems will become more limited, and prices will increase as demand grows.

  • Inventory Protection: For equipment ordered by July 31st, we will honor the current pricing on any available R-410A units in stock.
  • Price Adjustments: On August 1st, we will base pricing on the updated rates. If previously quoted equipment is not ordered by July 31st, a new quote will be issued reflecting the updated pricing.
  • Potential Delays: Due to increased demand for alternative refrigerant systems, there may be longer lead times for equipment delivery.

R-410a Phase-Out Timeline

The EPA has implemented regulations that will gradually phase out R-410a:

The EPA has banned the production and import of new R-410A self-contained HVAC systems starting January 1, 2025. These systems can still be sold and installed until January 1, 2028.

Split systems are banned for installation after January 1, 2025, but there’s an ongoing push to extend this deadline.

VRF/V systems and most industrial-process chillers will have an installation ban after January 1, 2026 or January 1, 2028, with specific deadlines varying by application and exit fluid temperature.

Individual components of split systems can still be replaced indefinitely. However, combining multiple new components to create a complete system is illegal and impractical due to warranty and regulatory issues.

Refrigerant availability and efficiency regulations may complicate repairs and replacements in the future.
