December 5, 2024

Project Overview

Cox-Powell successfully completed a comprehensive HVAC system upgrade at the athletic center and gymnasium on a Private School campus in Richmond, VA. The project involved replacing the outdated boiler and water heating system with modern, energy-efficient equipment.

Project Scope

The project encompassed the following key tasks:

  • Equipment Removal: Careful removal of the existing, aged boiler and associated piping, as well as the outdated domestic water heating system, including storage tanks and related infrastructure.
  • System Installation:
    • Two new 250gal 199MBH Condensing Commercial Water Heaters
    • Two new high-efficiency Lochinvar Crest 1000MBH condensing boilers
    • Two Intellihot tankless water heaters. This included the integration of new gas, water, electrical, and venting systems to support the new equipment.
  • Piping and System Integration: Precision installation of new piping and fittings to seamlessly connect the new boilers and water heaters to the existing heating and domestic water systems. This involved the incorporation of essential components such as expansion tanks, isolation valves, pumps, and control systems.
  • System Testing and Commissioning: Rigorous testing and commissioning of the newly installed heating and water heating systems to ensure optimal performance, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Compliance and Permits: Successful acquisition of necessary permits and coordination with Henrico County to ensure adherence to local regulations and building codes.

Project Outcomes

The project resulted in several significant improvements:

  • Enhanced Energy Efficiency: The new condensing boilers and tankless water heaters significantly reduced energy consumption, leading to lower utility costs for the school.
  • Improved Indoor Comfort: The upgraded heating system provided consistent and comfortable temperatures throughout the Fitness Center and Gymnasium.
  • Increased Hot Water Capacity: The installation of tankless water heaters eliminated hot water shortages and ensured ample supply for students and staff.
  • Extended Equipment Lifespan: The new equipment is designed for longevity, reducing the need for future repairs and replacements.
